The Golden Compass...

So today was the last day of classes...and well, with Rocket Lecturer around, you can be sure of one thing....we caught absolutely nothing. LOL

Nothing much eventful happened....cept I ferried KK around to get his van serviced at Citroen centre, where we found 2 OSIM iSymphonic chairs and promptly plumped our fat asses down to er....test the integrity of the chairs. LOL. Twice.

Anyways, the day was rather uneventful....went to West Mall after work, did some more christmas shopping...(this is really breaking the bank here...I imagine we'll be begging after)

Watched the Golden Compass. Plot's rather good, but unfortunately the post film editing wasn't. Pretty much a letdown for the movie's potential. Still, I hope they'll do better in the sequel. CGI's were pretty good. hehe. And Nicole Kidman...well. nuff said.

Guess who's the bad guy again? ehehehe...no prizes for star wars fans here.

Tata.

College Saga Video

I just had to post this up here.

College Saga - Just the last hillarious final fight part.

Enjoy!

Just FYI, it was made by a singaporean student studying in the US. Mark Leung.

Even has a advert in SG. lol.

Breakfast today

Ok, I am suddenly blogging regularly.

This is a shock.

To me.

Lol. Shows you how free students are these days.

Anyway, so after sending wifey to work, me and KK decided to have breakfast at Ayer Rajah market, so off we went and once there, decided that some good old prata would be the dish of the day. That went pretty well, and KK decided to order some eggs as well so we ordered 2 sets from the drink stall.

When the kopitiam auntie came with the eggs, she told us 10 mins to wait and we were pretty puzzled cos half boiled eggs don't usually take that long to cook. In any case, we decided after 5 mins to try and .....

5 mins: 1st egg: not cooked

10 mins: 2nd egg: still not cooked

15 mins: 3rd egg: still.....never mind, you get the idea

20 mins: 4 th egg: never tried, just got $1.60 back from the auntie.

Very unsatisfying so KK suggested Ya Kun at holland v.

And off we went.

LOL.

All for the sake of this;

Oh, well...happiness

Hahaha....very expensive breakfast it turned out to be though...hmm.

Room-Warming: The Aftermath and the Day After Tomorrow (I mean Yesterday, LOL)

I think I'll take a new approach to this.

Instead of writing from the beginning to the end, I shall take a page out of ifuggedwhatisthenameofthatmovie and begin from the end.

So as I write this post, I am right now sitting in a dark, hot, and humid closed foodcourt in Singapore Poly, waiting for wifey to finish her class. Opposite me is KK, whom incidentally will be blogging the same subject as part of today's. Just back from ABC market in Alexandra actually, where we just had a bowl each of the biggest and the best (well, pretty damn good, anyway) wantan mee in our sad short history of wantan mee.

Here's a pic of the bowl, which, incidentally, is part of the menu as a $3 bowl. No kidding, folks.

Its bigger than the picture actually gives justice for. See KK's blog, his "awesome" N95 might have a bigger pic.... maybe.

Review: 4/5 stars.

The sauce is excellent, and even with chili, the chili paste did not overwhelm the taste of the noodles. Of particular mention, I think, is the noodles. Done and cooked just right, with the right amount of springiness and tension and yet soft to the teeth. The soup was alright, although a little bland, but the dumplings were very nice as well. For value of $, it was sheer heaven.

Ok, I guess I am pretty bad at writing reviews. LOL. Just eat it lar, it is VERY nice.

Today was basically spent doing Seref Aksu's assignment, well, more like 60% copying actually, if you look at it. But looking back now, I am pretty amazed that us four (KK, myself, Jeremy and Andy) actually managed to sit down for the entire day (that means 9am to 5pm folks) and actually get some work done, instead of like last week when we were continually breaking off to play games lol. Still, its a good start, and I am rather proud of our gang. hehe.

Yesterday was our impromptu room-warming party, and although we invited some friends and family over, it was partly marred by the absence of some, but, as of today, I hear that misunderstanding has been cleared up. Still, I would like to stress that this "putting aeroplane" business is rather disturbing. Even between close friends, this business can be rather distressing to all involved. In fact, Wifey couldn't produce her usual standard of dongfen, to big bear's and small bear's slight disappointment.

Mahjong took up the rest of the afternoon, which I managed to siam, instead watching recorded episodes of Jumeng all the way. Pretty addictive show. Lol. These koreans really do have a talent for this.

However, I did not manage to siam the night training for the majong, when mom, sis and wifey ganged up on me to sit down and learn with the threat of no more chocalates and also waving a box of ferrero rocher in front of me. Oh well, some sacrifices for the sake of my choco. LOL

Pretty much fun a game is mahjong, lol. Although I still can't really figure out the "eye" and the myriad of patterns in the game, I think I've pretty much got the basics down. hopefully. Although, to me, its still too long a game to be playing for the sum of money involved. I'd much rather play blackjack. LOL.

Yet another super wordy post.

LOL

Tata

Cheers from the Big Bear.

Some Clarification

Ok, so my wife was reading my latest post, and she got concerned that some people might mis-read the following, and I quote from myself;

"For those who are keen to know what married life is like, all I can say is, it's a major adjustment, but no one can really teach you how to live with your future partner. Its really yourself, and in fact, the TV shows and movies that we are so influenced with are all so stereotyped, and really, can't be further off the mark than they already are. It's pretty sad really, when you hear stories of how a couple gets together, each thinking they can live their own life, or thinking how they can change their other half, and how wrong they are. Or when everyone knows they are living an impossible dream, or a mistake, and yet they continually provide excuses for themselves to allow themselves to continue torturing themselves, or to allow themselves to avoid facing the cold, hard truth. Some see quarrellings as communication, and learning about each other more." Unquote.

I wish to state here that I do not mean our own relationship!

Please do not start spamming me now. LOL

What I meant was I have heard about problems from our own friends, and these were just my comments and my own personal views, and are in no way a reflection of my relationship with wifey. Which, by the way, is still par excellente.

Cheers

Room-Warming

Just took a look at my last post....LOL...apparently its been almost 2 months since then....

Ok, I admit I've been lazy, but in my defence, I have been rather occupied with stuff.....like Titan's Quest lol (thanks Jeremy for the shopping parade!!)

So for the un-informed, I officially joined the married club on the 15th of September, with my other half, Wynne, at the Church of St. Mary of the Angels. For more info, call me. Haha. I'll get round to posting photos....eventually. hehe

Otherwise, things have largely been eventful, but really nothing major. September was largely occupied with last minute preparations, which, thankfully, went off without any major hoo-has. Even managed to squeeze in a weekend getaway to Thailand. Crazy shopping there....and came back with half a wardrobe's worth of Adidas clothing. LOL. Looking forward to our next trip there....this time, some real touring must be done. LOL.

For what we went through on that day itself, please read KK's blog, here. Many thanks also to Larry, my ad-hoc, volunteer Wedding Planner. You rock man! Anyone who needs one, please, do get him. You'll thank me later. Hahahahaha....

Then came the 2nd dinner, held for my Malaysian relatives, also largely uneventful, the bus ride was rather comfortable, in fact, I was pleasantly surprised. Managed to visit St. Anne's Church in BM, and its really impressive! I'll try and get photos....I know I have it somewhere.... haha. Some better planning for accommodation could have been arranged from there, but largely ok la, for those who do not mind the budget style living. I guess some Singaporeans are just too pampered. Wynne met my youngest aunt for the first time, and I guess the immediate feeling is what us have been saying all along. I won't put it down here though.

I got the car, and drove all the way down from Penang. Many people have said wow!, that's like nuts, but honestly, if you have the company, then it makes the drive much much easier. Only the lousy 1.3L Suzuki did not help by having the maximum speed being the legal limit of the expressway. LOL. Was having most fun looking at oil tankers and express buses flashing me and overtaking me. Oh well, hard luck. haha

Started my degree course in Oct, and am now adjusting back to student mode. The course is well, so far, ok, but a little heavy on the mathematics side....now I wish I had paid more attention in class earlier. LOL.

For those who are keen to know what married life is like, all I can say is, it's a major adjustment, but no one can really teach you how to live with your future partner. Its really yourself, and in fact, the TV shows and movies that we are so influenced with are all so stereotyped, and really, can't be further off the mark than they already are. It's pretty sad really, when you hear stories of how a couple gets together, each thinking they can live their own life, or thinking how they can change their other half, and how wrong they are. Or when everyone knows they are living an impossible dream, or a mistake, and yet they continually provide excuses for themselves to allow themselves to continue torturing themselves, or to allow themselves to avoid facing the cold, hard truth. Some see quarrellings as communication, and learning about each other more. I see it as a total breakdown in communication, when both parties refuse to give way to each other and give excuses to their own failings. But of course, there are many perceptions as to what a quarrel really means;

a) Breakdown in communication
b) Using loud voices and bluster to hide the real point of the qns/conversation
c) A need to scream?

You take your own meaning from there.

Enough ranting for a day now.

And I just realised that I totally went off point from my blog title.

LOL.

Just for info, Sean was telling Wynne the other day in the office, when could he come over for a room-warming. Since we were married, but did not move to a new house, and only renovated to a new room, hence the meaning. LOL. Interesting bugger.

So its tomorrow, the small room warming. haha. Its gonna be just dinner and the Wii! hooha!. And mahjong for the folks who cant handle a wireless controller. Hehehee.

Cheers to all!

《一人一半》
演唱:伍加輝
改編詞:小寒 曲:伍加輝

一人一半 感情不散
一人一素故 感情才會久
時光累計 安靜的淚滴
一心去追 愛那么可貴

Chorus:

Repeat Chorus*

一人一半 感情不散
已經找到愛 為何要離開
已經找到愛 為何先離開

Hmm...this is becoming quite an interesting hobby.....hahahaha...

Un voleur, solitaire, est triste nourrir (this is a pun off of 'triste mourrir' and 'nourrir'; see here)

English Translation - The Feast

The dreams of lovers are like good wine
They give joy or even sorrow
Weakened by hunger, I am unhappy
Stealing on my way everything I can
Because nothing in life is free.

Hope is a dish too soon finished
I am accustomed to skipping meals
A thief alone and hungry is sad enough to die (This isn't a direct translation at all, but it's the best way I could think of to explain the pun)
As for us, I am bitter, I want to succeed
Because nothing in life is free.

Never will they tell me that I cannot shoot for the stars;
Let me fill you with wonder, let me take flight
We will finally fea . . . st.

The party will finally start
And bring out the bottles, the troubles are over
I'm setting the table; tomorrow is a new life
I am happy at the idea of this new destiny
A life spent in hiding, and now I'm finally free
The feast is on my path
A life spent in hiding, and now I'm finally free
The feast is on my path. . . .

Ok Sorry for no posts

Ok....I know I have been tardy....and lazy....and whatever you choose to comment.

I promise I will be back....soon.

haha.

Day Two: 1st Day at work @ Jiangmen Hongda

So I promised some photos of the dorm... here it is...Not too bad really, with the exception of the following;

  1. The silly teeny weeny fan

  2. Dirty floor which means you gotta wear your shoes around, not to mention their habit of spitting in the corridor

  3. The bed which looks deceptively comfortable but is as hard as a wooden plank...ok...maybe i'm just exaggerating a little...

Otherwise its really all pretty good.

Not too bad eh...

This 1-man room is for all the guests and managers...

The rest of the staff bunk is 4-person rooms which are about the same size. And then there's the sub-contractors who get 8-man rooms....also the same size...amazing...Didn't get to see their bunks though.

One thing I gotta say...the view in the morning is pretty amazing....check the following out!

Only in China will you see this....Paddy fields next to construction sites and shipyards!...LOL

Morning breakfast was a simple fried vermicelli....(they seem to love vermicelli, what we know as Mee Sua)...

Pretty good...nothing to complain...

It almost seems like a routine day at work....except no one speaks english....and they're all amazed I SPEAK ENGLISH AND FLUENTLY TOO...LOL

Nothing much really happened...spent most of the day clearing work remotely. The broadband connection here really helps a thousand-fold...

I leanrt a new idiom about them China Chinese today... "The Chinese eat when its time to eat, not when they're supposed to eat"

How very true.

At 12.00, right on the dot, everything just goes down....lights, doors, windows, the lot.

LUNCHTIME!

And right after that, a siesta until 1.30pm.

DAMN!

I wish that was so in Singapore....but then again, we wouldn't be able to get any work done...

Its the same case at 5.30pm. Either they have nothing to do, or they really respect that idiom too much to care.

This time, add in the locking of doors as well....so that no one sneaks back to work overtime and make the rest look bad...LOL

Night in Jiangmen...is well...night...

Pitch. Fucking. Dark.

You couldn't see your balls in the dark without a light....sorry for the language...

Anyways, I got to go see the town at night...

Here is Shadui Village's equivalent of ... Orchard Road!

Impressive eh? LOL

Got a hair wash too... only RMB 10. That's like S$2! lol...

A view of the hairdressers....dyeing hair is like only 300 RMB...or 60 bucks..

And here's a view of the local version of Tangs...

And a view of Harvey Norman..oops...I meant Shadui Central Electronics Store

And this is the IRAS...oops...nope... Shadui Village Tax Centre

Citycab.............on two wheels.

Everything pretty much shuts down after 7....only these few shops were the die-hard ones....

Went for a drink after that....Kingway Beer...3.3%. At RMB 5 per bottle, it is cheaper that a bottle of Sprite!

Sprite = RMB5.5

Amazing...like I said...

Adios to all for now.......

Wan An....

Day One: Going to China

So as probably everyone I know already knows, of if you don't, then now you probably know, and if you still
don't know what I'm talking about then please read on and knock your head as well....

So it all started pretty well...like I got to the airport early and then checked in and all...The budget terminal's
pretty good really, on the sparse side but then again, what do you expect eh..
And then the nonsense really got going.

I met Jeffery's man at the checkin counter and he checked in as well, then as soon as we were in the departure hall, KL's call comes in....

"Eh, Winfield, where are you huh?"
"Erm, at the airport?"
"Err, why are you flying so early for?"
"Err...I thought you told Jeffery to book the tickets to go on Monday, 23rd?"
"The meeting's on Thursday, what are you going to do there until then?"
OMG
1st shock of the day!
Boarded the plane now, then realised never bring H/P charger....oh well...
The flight was pretty uneventful...typical of a budget airline...you dont get anything i guess....bought a drink and a sandwich...good thing, cos I wasn't going to eat anything else or get the chance to until at night...
Landed now at Macau, immigration uneventful.... tried to call Jeffrey, realised no autoroam, so went to a payphone to try and he didnt pick up....then the man with me said usually he will take a bus, then i was like , well, alrighty , maybe the car cant come to macau...so after the payphone ate M$5 and didnt return the coin , we were out of M$ so had to bargain with the bus driver, in the end dumped a S$2 in lol...
Some pics of the view....forgive the shots...taken from the minibus...LOL

Casinos....a whole stretch of them...
Casinos that look like avolcano.....no end to imagination....
and more casinos....
And then i noticed something abt the bus....its auto...gee...that's weird....
After about 45 mins drive, we got to the bus terminal near the customs border, and then I realised that Macau is actually one of the best planned cities in the world....everytihng is near each other....or maybe its just small....lol

Got through the customs with relatively little hassle, except for the customs officers reminding me to change the passport cos it was water damaged....and the smudging didnt help i guess...

Shock No. 2

No car or transport available from the yard....

OMG

And off we go now to the Chinese bus terminal....and I noticed something weird....

Their buses have beds! WOW

LOL....didnt get a pic cos my hands were full with the bags...lol

Boarded Service 608 and off we went!

You know, someone once said, its no use if you have the best equipment but you do not have the talent to operate it....

Mind you, the buses were excellent. European built and all...Scania, Volvo....you name the lot.

But the drivers...oh well...

And the roads....oh my god.

And the traffic....even worse. I dun think anybody around here has even a license to drive....

And the pedestrians TOTAL disregard for traffic doesnt help....

So we bumped and rode our way into the outskirts of Zhuhai...

And I realised one thing...the bus company doesnt trust the people to pay the correct fare...hehe

you gotta tell them where you're going to the conductor and pay the fare in accordance.

a 21st century bus and a 1970's practice...LOL

And only, ONLY, the bus conductor can signal the driver to stop....lol, even though the bus stopping signs are all over the bus

And after 2 hours...oh boy, we finally reached BDCranetech's office in China. And I realise now that NO ARRANGEMENTS WERE MADE AT ALL!

Well, judging by their reaction anyway.

So, by this time, I was starving. Good thing the canteen was open and we had a bowl of noodles. very nice noodles too...Kudos to the cook!

And then now a driver comes...its the boss's son (New Oasis) and off we go to the yard....

Reached the dorm after some very dangerous driving in absolute pitch darkness....LOL

The dorm is pretty good.....very high standard in fact...and just about the one bright spot in this whole day....apart from the mosquito thingy...

Will take some photos to post regarding the dorm....

Time to sleep now.....

To my dearest Wynne, I miss you very badly....muacks and good nights

To all the rest....adios from China!

The N95 - A Brutally Honest Review

So the new current craze is now on the new phone from Nokia....The all-new N95!!

Its what computers have become.... or so says then tagline.... Now how is it I can't pop my dvd in and play Command & Conquer 3?

But here now....I'm supposed to review this....so here goes....

On first touch, the phone feels very sleek, however, the boxy shape of the phone gives a hint of what the phone can achieve. The large TFT screen is extremely clear and bright and even for the hard-of-sight, viewability is not a problem. On a rough test of the weight, it is clear that Nokia have done wonders with the weight problem and actually have made it lesser than the predecessor, the N80. This is unfortunately, a problem with the N-series.... Its just not a phone to be slid and hidden into the pocket. Its sheer size and weight will always make its presence felt with the user, not unlike many phones from other makes nowadays.

So first off, the camera. It is clear that this is the N95's trump card, boasting nothing less than a 5-megapixel camera with digital zoom, auto-focus and a whole shebang of other features. It is also clear that with this camera, they were hoping to trump Sony Ericsson's flagship model, the K800i. While in taking pictures and setting camera options, the N95 does beat the K800i hands down, however, the key part of the K800i is the flash. N95 flash? Nothing better than the N80, which sucked. Big Time. Also, the whole lot of options presented in the N95 may just overwhelm the average photo-taker, which looks like that of a DSLR menu, rather than a phone. Other points about the features of the N95, presented in point form...cos I'm a little lazy...LOL;

  1. File accessibility is still extremely slow. Often causes the phone to hang. This is something that has to be addressed urgently by the Nokia engineers
  2. Not able to go directly from the camera menu to the gallery to view photos.
  3. Screen extremely clear. Even the blind can see what was taken
  4. Video mode is excellent. Anyone looking for a budget handycam may consider this phone. Although you must be able to live with No.1 above.
  5. The software provided with the phone is excellent, although it would be considered common now. Comes with a pdf viewer which is good feature

And with a horrific realisation that this post is getting impossibly long......I will end my review here.

Now you know why I work at a shipyard....

A satisfied bolster bear

My dearest looking extremely satisfied at the thought of chips chocs and biscuits! FOR DINNER! WaHahaHaha....

The New PC

So then the new PC comes today....and I finally understand that Dell does take its terms and conditions seriously....

Delivery and no installation just means just that....they dump the boxes onto your doorstep, you sign and off they go to make another person happy for about....well....10 secs

Well, at least the packing list was detailed enough for a PC-noob to go through and verify everything actually arrived...

And as I predicted so correctly, the first question was "Where's the power button?!"

And then;

"Its so small....I can't see the button...." OMG!"

"The screen is still so small....." (Mind you, its a 20" widescreen HD)

"The table's not right for the PC..."

And a whole long list of other comments....

And when I tried to get started on unpacking and fixing up the damn thing....

Well, that's a story for another night...

The trouble with technology and technocrats

So here comes another weekend....and I'm still sitting on my arse working when just about everyone else I deal with is at home catching up on their winks....

What's the deal? Jeezz..

So then my mom just bought a new PC, Core 2 Duo and all that crap, and I bet the first question she will ask me is....."Win, how do I turn it on?!"

So for all the advanced technology in the world, Dell still cant teach a person how to turn it on....LOL

And so here goes the main topic of the day....

In a sense of the word, it seems that there are still so many of us who prefer the old way.
So what if we have 3G, video calling, blah blah blah....
99% of cellular phone users buy a phone to just .... well.... phone. 3G? hello?....

A lecturer of mine recently told us this story that really provoked my thoughts on this. Even though his lecturing was an ass....

See, in the shipyards in the 70s, notes and memos were passed around by hand (no email then). So Person A would pass a memo to B telling him to follow up on something.
And B would then reply on the same sheet telling A what he had done.

Or in the case of a drawing, A would pass it to B and to C and to whoever was involved, all the while having comments written on the same sheet of paper.

Fast forward back to the 90s.

What do we do now?

We send email.

We CC the entire world.

We dont get an answer

So we CC the entire universe in the next email.

Then the other person gets it, replies and CCs the entire universe as well.

We fire arrows electronically without even realising the true implications of those arrows.

And in the end.....

The two parties involved make a phone call, meet up, and settle the matter.

Making the thousands of emails, letters, memos (electronic), blah blah absolutely irrelevant.

Ok.....that's enough ranting for the week.

Now, while I'm at it now.....

Watching Music and Lyrics for the 2nd time tonight....

LOL...

Its really nice though, this show. Even though the story is a little lame, the soundtrack rocks. and that;s really what carries the show throughout.

The upcoming singer portraying Cora Corman in the show looks to have a sure bright future though. Watch for the jibes at Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

LOL

Check it out.

300! 3 Cheers for the Spartans!

Watched 300 last week....and all I can say is....

I WAS BLOWN AWAY!

MTV reported it as the next step in filmmaking and I have to say that I fully agree with them.

The fight choreography was excellent and far better than in any recent movies.

So what are ya waitin for?.........GO WATCH IT!

Trust me, even if you don't like blood and gore, you'll like this one.
